Livestock Health Update – Bluetongue
The Dartmoor Commoners’ Council is very aware of the increasing concern within the commoning community about the current cases of bluetongue affecting livestock and strangles affecting ponies on Dartmoor.
This is an extremely worrying time for those with animals on the commons. Commoners care deeply about the health and welfare of their stock and ponies, and the Council recognises the considerable anxiety and practical difficulties these disease outbreaks are causing.
We would ask everyone to remain particularly vigilant, to follow veterinary and official animal health advice, and to take every reasonable precaution to reduce the risk of disease spreading.
Bluetongue
There are confirmed cases of bluetongue in Devon, and livestock keepers are asked to be particularly vigilant.
Bluetongue is spread by biting midges not through direct contact between animals. Signs can include fever, lethargy, swelling of the face or muzzle, drooling, nasal discharge, sores or crusting around the mouth and nose, lameness and loss of condition.
Bluetongue is a notifiable disease. If you suspect bluetongue, contact your vet and report it immediately to APHA on 03000 200 301. Please continue to follow current Defra and APHA guidance.
The Council will continue to share information as it becomes available and work with commoners, Local Commoners’ Associations and the relevant animal health authorities.
Please look out for one another and keep neighbouring commoners informed. Early communication is one of the most important things we can all do to help protect animals across Dartmoor.
We also recognise the emotional and financial strain that animal disease can place on farming families. RABI provides free, confidential practical, financial and emotional support to farming people. Their helpline is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year:
