Burrator, Dartmoor

Life & Traditions

The future conservation and maintenance of Dartmoor's commons is heavily dependent on the survival of the hill farmers, and their ability to graze animals. Their experience and specific skills are required to manage the stock and vegetation, and these skills have been passed on from one generation to the another.

Hill farming

There are about 850 registered commoners but today less than a quarter of that number are farmers who continue to use the commons for grazing.
